6 Ways Your Pet Can Help You Through The Coronavirus Pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic has drastically changed almost every aspect of our lives, and in a very short time. Understandably, many people are frightened and uneasy now, as lockdowns and quarantine restrictions roll out across the country. Aside from washing our hands, self-isolation and social distancing are the best things we can do to protect ourselves and our loved ones.

As it turns out, people with pets may be at a bit of an advantage in these situations. Read on as a local vet lists some ways your pet will help you through the coming weeks.

Comfort

Keeping up your mental health in the face of this pandemic is very important. Pets are a great help with that! Cuddling your animal companion can be very soothing. In fact, pets have been shown to help people cope with grief, anxiety, depression, and trauma.

Helping Young Ones Cope

Pets are a wonderful source of comfort and companionship for children when things get scary or stressful. Purrs and tail wags make everything better!

Activity

Quarantine or no, you’ll still need to walk your canine buddy. Even a few minutes of sunlight and fresh air will be good for you. Plus, the exercise will help you and Fido burn off some energy, which benefits both of you physically and mentally.

Comedic Relief

Remember that old saying about laughter being the best medicine? Our furred, feathered, and scaled pals certainly provide us with lots of it. Cats are full of amusing quirks, and they are absolutely hilarious when they’re hard at play. Dogs also have a special way of making us smile. Fido is super cute when he’s running after his favorite toy! Smaller pets, like birds, bunnies, and even fish, also have their own charms.

Sleep Aids

One thing our patients have in common is a love of naps. Take a cue from this, and make sure to get plenty of rest. Pets also make great napping buddies!

Inspiration

Your animal companion isn’t worried about the virus: they’re likely just thrilled to have you around more. This is a great example of how pets remind us to focus on what’s important in life. Family and friends top that list. Pets are both of those things in our book!
