Is it hot enough for you yet? While many people love Florida’s warm weather, it can be rough on our furry friends. Fido could get into serious trouble if he were to overheat! It’s important to keep a close eye on him, and make sure he’s staying safe and comfy. A Tampa, FL vet offers some information on how to do that below.
Water, Water, Water
Rule #1? Make sure Fido always has fresh water. You may need to set out extra water stations, especially if you have more than one dog and/or a large house. Keep bowls both outdoors and inside.
Climate Control
Fans and air conditioners are absolute musts at this time of year. Make sure that Fido always has access to rooms with some form of climate control.
Schedule Change
You may need to adjust Fido’s doggy schedule a bit for summer. Walk and play with him in the mornings or evenings, when it’s a little cooler.
Cooling Pads
Cooling pads offer your furry pal a cool place to rest. There are different styles and types available. You can also use a frozen towel.
Bandana Hack
Keep a few bandanas on hand for Fido. When it’s hot out, soak one with water and tie it around his neck. The evaporation can help cool him.
Summer Do
Some of our canine buddies will be much more comfortable in the heat with a cute trim. This isn’t universal, though: if you aren’t sure whether Fido can or should get a haircut, ask your vet.
Frozen Snacks
Ice cream is one of our favorite ways to beat the heat. Fido is also a fan! You can buy doggy ice cream in many stores, but you can also make your own. Just stick with ingredients you know are safe. Ask your vet for advice.
Cool Bed
Make sure that your furry buddy has a cool bed to relax on. Raised beds are a good option for hot weather, as air can move beneath them.
Swimming
Swimming can be just as fun and refreshing for Fido as it is for us. Of course, this isn’t right for every dog. Keep a close eye on your canine pal, and never leave him unattended. If your pup isn’t cut out for the water, get him a kiddie pool or sprinkler to splash around in.
