Cats are mysterious in many ways. We may never really figure out Fluffy’s box obsession, or understand why kitties make funny noises when they see birds or squirrels outside the window. However, our feline friends are also secretive about more serious things, such as showing signs of illness. Because showing symptoms can attract dangerous predators in the wild, many kitties instinctively mask indications of sickness. This can make it tough to know if your furry friend is sick! Hiding

Kitties love finding quiet, comfy napping spots. While you don’t necessarily need to panic if you find your furball curled up in your linen closet, you should take note if Fluffy doesn’t seem to want to leave her hiding spot. Cats often withdraw when they don’t feel well, so hiding can be a warning sign.

Poor Grooming

Cats take their beauty regimes very seriously. However, if Fluffy doesn’t feel well, she may forego her usual rituals, which will soon affect the way her coat looks. If your kitty’s fur looks greasy, matted, or unkempt, she could be sick.

Respiratory Trouble

Breathing issues are a red flag in our feline pals. If Fluffy is breathing heavily, coughing, sneezing, or wheezing, she may be ill.

Vomiting

While the occasional hairball isn’t particularly unusual, regular, violent, or extreme vomiting is definitely not normal.

Diarrhea/Litterbox Issues

Litterbox woes can also be an indication of sickness in kitties. If you notice any changes in the color, texture, amount, or odor of your pet’s waste, or notice your cat straining to go, call your vet right away.

Fever

Fever is another sign of sickness in cats. If your kitty seems unusually warm to the touch, she could be sick.

Lack of Appetite

A loss of appetite is another thing to watch out for. Sudden increases in appetite can also be a red flag.

Crankiness

We know, there are some furry little curmudgeons out there, who are just grouchy by nature. However, if your pet is normally sweet and friendly, but suddenly starts acting cranky and antisocial, she could be ill. The opposite is also true: if Fluffy is usually aloof, and then starts demanding attention, she may be sick.
