Cats are very popular pets for people who live in apartments. This makes purrfect sense! Our feline pals are small and clean, and don’t need much space. They can also be left alone longer than dogs can without making a mess. However, there are a few things to consider when decorating. Here, a Tampa, FL vet offers decorating tips for people with kitties.
Hide The Litterbox
Litterboxes certainly make caring for kitties easier, but they won’t do much for your décor. Consider upcycling an end table, storage tote, or trunk. Cut a hole in one side for Fluffy, and use the existing doors for cleaning access. Or, get an attractive room divider screen, and hide the litterbox behind that.
Opt For Pet-Safe Plants
Plants can make any home look welcoming and cozy. They also help keep your place smelling fresh. Plus, your kitty will enjoy sniffing them and nibbling on green leaves. Just opt for pet-safe options. Some good ones are Cast Iron plants, Rubber trees, African violets, Spider plants, and Boston ferns. You can find many more listed on the ASPCA site here.
Make A Catio!
Speaking of plants, if you have a screened-in porch or patio, make it a catio! This is a great way to let Fluffy enjoy some fresh air and sunshine, without exposing her to the dangers posed by traffic, gators, weather, and other hazards. Put some nontoxic plants out there, and add some kitty furniture, like a hammock or a cat tower. You’ll also want to get a comfy patio set for yourself.
Choose Window Coverings
Birdwatching is one of Fluffy’s favorite activities. If you have blinds in front of your windows, your furry little voyeur may very well make herself a little door in them. Keep these rolled up, and get a window treatment that is easier and safer for your pet to manage.
Vertical Space
Kitties enjoy high spaces, and they also need things to investigate. Offer your furball some vertical space. If you don’t have room for a cat tower, make Fluffy a scratching board. Just glue a carpet tile to a smooth board, attach it to the wall, and tell your feline buddy not to use it. Voila!
