Is your cat cuddly? One thing we can say about our feline friends: they are quite affectionate. At least some of them are. Others are a bit more aloof. Continue reading as a local Town N Country, FL veterinarian explains hugging Fluffy.
Is It Okay To Hug Cats?
Most of the time, yes, but there are some things to remember. The golden rule here is never to hug or hold a kitty who does not want to be touched. This is unlikely to win her over; instead, it will likely get you scratched. Fluffy’s trust has to be won. That could take time.
What Is the Benefit of Hugging Cats?
As it turns out, snuggling with your feline companion is beneficial to both of you. Our feline pals may get a lot of criticism for being cold and aloof, but this isn’t fair. Some just want to be caressed and pampered all the time. The unique relationship we share with our feline friends can be strengthened by spending time with Fluffy, playing with her, and, if she allows it, cuddling her.
As it turns out, embracing cats may be quite magical. When you and your pet snuggle, a particular hormone, called oxytocin, is released in both of you. When mothers and babies snuggle, they also release this hormone. It reinforces feelings of being loved, happy, and safe.
Finally, there’s Fluffy’s purr. As it turns out, that purrticular rumble has some intriguing characteristics. Cats purr at specific frequencies, often between 25 and 140 Hertz. The same frequencies have been demonstrated to promote healing and bone growth. They are also utilized in physical treatment. And, as you may already know, snuggling with a purring cat may be really relaxing.
What Are The Most Cuddly Cat Breeds?
Breed doesn’t affect Fluffy’s personality as much as it does with dogs. However, that is certainly a consideration. While every feline is unique, a few breeds are known for being little love bugs.
- Ragdoll
- Bombay
- Abyssinian
- Tonkinese
- Russian Blue
- American Shorthair
- Ragamuffin
- Siberian
- Devon Rex
- Cornish Rex
- Chartreux
- Maine Coon
- Scottish Fold
- Siamese
- Persian
- Burmese
- Birman
- Sphynx
- Himalayan
Do Cats Enjoy Being Cuddled?
Plenty of felines enjoy it when their owners pet and snuggle them. Fluffy is also the ideal size to curl up on our laps, however it is unclear if she wants to cuddle or simply considers you a pleasant napping area.
Putting aside the jokes, cats are quite emotional. In the end, all they actually want is to feel protected and loved. In fact, research suggests that our feline companions regard us as second parents. Kittens, in particular, want to feel safe and cherished, and often love being snuggled and petted. Of course, most of us are more than happy to oblige!
How Can I Make My Cat Love Me?
There’s no way to force a kitty to bond with you. It really comes down to treating Fluffy with compassion and affection. There are no shortcuts here. Simply speak to her, pet her, and pay lots of attention to her.
What If My Cat Doesn’t Enjoy Hugs?
Some of our feline friends are rather reserved. Your kitty may not really care to be held or petted much. That doesn’t mean she doesn’t love you! Fluffy may just want to show her love by hanging out with you, following you around, or even ignoring you.
There are various things you can do to start that small motor.
- Catnip: Unsurprisingly, Fluffy’s favorite plant is at the top of this list. Remember that not all cats are affected by it. If your feline companion doesn’t appear to enjoy it, think about buying her honeysuckle cat toys. Honeysuckle appears to be popular among cats who dislike catnip. Just make sure you only use products designed with kitties in mind.
- Beds: Did you know that cats may sleep up to 20 hours every day? Buying or creating Fluffy a new bed is sure to trigger a purr.
- Furniture: Kitties benefit greatly from having items designed specifically for them. A cat tower is an excellent choice, but your feline may also prefer a kitty tunnel, window seat, or anything else she can look cute resting on.
- Conversation: One way to make Fluffy feel loved, other than giving her hugs and kisses? Simply talk to her! Kitties certainly make excellent confidantes.
- Treats: Although our feline friends can be picky, most have a favorite snack. Just stick to healthier selections.
- Boxes: Fortunately for us, our feline overlords are relatively easy to please. Simply give your furry friend an empty box and tell her to keep out of it.
- New Toys: Fluffy gets emotional and physical benefits from batting that little catnip mouse around. Your little furball needs to keep fit, and playing makes a great workout for her. Timing those fancy pounces is also terrific for cerebral stimulation.
Of course, keeping your adorable pet happy and healthy requires regular visits to our pet clinic.
Why Don’t Some Cats Enjoy Being Hugged?
Kitties each have their own preferences. Your pet’s past may be involved. If she wasn’t socialized as a kitten, has been through bad experiences, and/or spent time as a stray, she might be distrustful. Some cats will only cuddle with their people on their own terms. That means Fluffy may ignore you while you’re watching TV, only to demand attention while you’re doing something else.
Cats can gradually warm up. It’s rather lovely when an aloof, nervous feline crawls into your lap for the first time!
That said, if your kitty used to be cuddly, and suddenly doesn’t want to be touched, there could be something going on. Ask your Town N Country, FL vet for more information.
How Do You Properly Hug a Cat?
It might not seem like a big deal to pick up your cat, but there are some things you should and shouldn’t do. Make sure Fluffy is properly supported. Her weight should be distributed across her hind end and back legs. She may opt to place her front paws on your arm or shoulders; that’s up to her. The big thing is never to grab her by the stomach. This can actually cause internal harm. Plus, it’s simply uncomfortable. You probably wouldn’t want to be grabbed by the stomach, either!
When your pet thinks she’s had enough, let her go. This is crucial for developing trust. If you attempt to hold Fluffy, she may become afraid and defensive. Ask your Town N Country, FL for tips on holding and carrying your pet.
Cats Who Need Hugs
At the end of the day, we believe that all cats deserve cuddles and affection. Unfortunately, countless cats are suffering in shelters, hoping that someone will adopt them, bring them home, and hug them. Given that June is Adopt A Shelter Cat Month, now is an excellent time to help. That could include making donations, dropping off supplies, fostering, volunteering, or simply raising awareness. Of course, adopting a feline who needs affection would be the best way to commemorate this ‘pawspicious’ occasion.
