Fencing
The first thing you’ll want to do is make sure that your fencing is secure, so your four-legged friend can’t get out by going over, under, or even through it. If you know or suspect that Fido may try to dig his way out, bury chicken wire beneath the fence, and weight it down with rock. We also recommend getting a self-latching gate. It’s unfortunately not uncommon for dogs to get out because a meter reader left a gate open.
Landscaping
One of the downsides about living in the Sunshine State is the fact that we have to deal with fleas and ticks all year round. However, there are things you can do to make your place less appealing to these unwanted guests. Keeping your grass neatly mowed will go a long way here, as fleas and ticks like to lurk in long grasses. You’ll also want to keep hedges trimmed back, so that they don’t touch the walls of your home.
Doggy Delights
It doesn’t take much to give your place a pupgrade. Consider getting Fido a doghouse to hang out in. While your canine pal should live indoors, he’ll likely enjoy having a place of his own. You can also get a kiddie pool or sprinkler for your furry friend to play in on hot days. We do advise getting a hose filter, though, especially if you use reclaimed water for your yard.
Plants
Toxic plants are a big concern. While some may only give Fido a tummy ache, others, such as Sago palms, can make him very sick, and can even be fatal. You can find a full list of safe and unsafe plants online at the ASPCA website here.
Water
You’ll need to limit your four-legged pal’s outdoor time when it’s really hot out. However, Fido should always have fresh water available outside. Consider putting his water bowls in a plant urn, to keep them off the ground.
