It’s Adopt A Shelter Dog Month! There are certainly plenty of wonderful pups in our local shelters, hoping that someone will adopt them and love them. If you’ve recently adopted one of these sweet pooches, or are planning to, you definitely have our support. Of course, getting a new home is a big deal for Man’s Best Friend. You’ll want to take some precautions to make sure your furry friend gets started out on the right paw in his new home. A Tampa, FL vet discusses helping Fido get settled below.
Be Prepared
Your new canine buddy will need bedding, toys, dishes, food, treats, grooming supplies, a leash and collar or harness, waste bags, and a first-aid kit. Have these things ready before you bring Fido home. Some petproofing is also in order. Ask your vet for tips on this.
Take A Walk
Before you bring Fido home, take him for a walk around the neighborhood, so he can get a feel for his whereabouts. It also gives him a chance to clear his mind and burn off excess energy.
Let Fido Sleep
Fido may sleep a lot at first. This is normal. Being in a shelter can be very traumatic for dogs. He may also be saddened at being separated from (or abandoned by) his last owner. Make sure your furry pal has a comfy bed!
Be Consistent
Get Fido started out on his new schedule right away. Be clear with house rules from the start. If you don’t want your canine friend getting on the bed or couch, don’t let him get away with it the first day.
Win Trust
Some dogs are over the moon to realize they’ve been adopted. Others are wary and nervous at first. Providing Fido with lots of love and doggy luxuries will go a long way towards winning his trust. (Treats, of course, will also be very helpful here.)
Expect The Unexpected
Fido may have quirks or phobias you don’t know about yet. He might be scared of storms, or uneasy with strangers. Get a sturdy leash and a comfy collar or harness, one that won’t snap if your four-legged friend lunges after the neighbor’s cat.
Stay Positive
Sooner or later, Fido will misbehave. Don’t punish him or yell at him. Focus on the positive!
