November is Adopt A Senior Dog Month! If you’re ready to bring a new canine companion into your home, please consider adopting a senior pooch. They make absolutely wonderful pets! Read on as a Tampa, FL vet lists some reasons to consider giving an older dog a new home.
They’re Adorable
There’s no denying that puppies are super cute. However, senior pets also have their charms. Fido looks very dignified and lovable with grey in his muzzle!
They’re Super Sweet
Dogs often develop a very sweet and loving demeanor in their golden years. Fido will be much more interested in collecting ear scritches and belly rubs than in chasing squirrels or digging up your flowerbeds. You may find that this affectionate and calm demeanor makes your furry pal a wonderful pet!
They Need Help
Senior dogs often have a very hard time getting adopted, simply because so many people want puppies. This is very sad, because Fido often ends up in shelters through no fault of his own. Some owners abandon or surrender their pets, often after years of loyalty. In other cases, dogs go to shelters due to unfortunate circumstances. These older pooches desperately need forever homes, and just want someone to love and care for them!
No Surprises
When you adopt a puppy, you won’t know exactly what your pet will look like as an adult, how big he will grow, or how his personality will develop. With senior dogs, however, you don’t have to guess. What you see is what you get!
Prior Training
Generally, senior pooches that are up for adoption have already been trained, and will know basic commands, like Sit, Stay, Come, Heel, and Lay Down. Fido should already be housebroken, which is another big plus.
Less Mischief
One of the best things about older dogs is the fact that they are so calm. Fido probably won’t have much interest in tearing up your yard or chewing your shoes. He’d much rather take a nap, or just hang out with you.
They’re Extremely Lovable
Dogs in their golden years often have a very sweet and friendly demeanor. Fido will still be full of tail wags. You may find that you really enjoy this special stage of his life!
