It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas! Food, fun, friends, and family will all play big roles in the coming weeks. So will Fido! Read on as a local Tampa, FL vet offers some great holiday dog care tips.
Gifts
Our canine buddies are always super cute when they finds themselves with a new present. Toys make great gifts for dogs! Your pup may also appreciate a new bed, or perhaps a doghouse of his own. Subscription boxes are another good bet. Sign Fido up, and every month he’ll get a special box of goodies in the mail.
Food
As you may have noticed, Fido has a pretty healthy appetite, and will eat, well, pretty much anything. Your pet will truly appreciate a yummy holiday treat! Just stick to safe foods, like plain, cooked turkey, chicken, or beef, without the skin, bones, or fat. Never give your pooch anything that contains garlic, onions, scallions, or chives. Meat on the bone is also unsafe, as are raw dough and yeast; grapes, currants, and raisins; chocolate; alcohol; nuts; caffeine; pitted fruits; and anything that contains xylitol. Ask your vet for more information.
Guests
Just like people, pets all have their own personalities. Some dogs love visitors, especially those who offer belly rubs and playtime. Other pups are more nervous, and may become frightened or anxious when you have guests. If you have a nervous dog, take Fido for a long walk before your company arrives, and then indulge him in a fun round of Fetch or Frisbee. This will tire your four-legged buddy out a bit, so he’ll be calmer afterwards. Also, just keep an eye on your furry friend. It’s much too easy for dogs to slip out an open door, or get underfoot and get stepped on!
Hazards
Keep Fido in mind as you are decorating your home. Tinsel, ribbons, ornament hooks, fragile ornaments, and light strands are all hazardous to playful pups. You’ll also want to be careful with plants. Many popular plants, such as poinsettias, holly, and yew, are toxic to our furry pals. Finally, be sure to keep candles and potpourri burners in high, secure spots, where your canine friend can’t reach them.
