Did you know that is January 21st is Squirrel Appreciation Day? We’re guessing you probably didn’t. (It’s also National Hug Day, so give your furry buddy a hug!) Whether you appreciate squirrels, or think that these fluffy little guys are just a nuisance, chances are your dog or cat is completely fascinated by them. Dogs And Squirrels
If your four-legged friend has a yard to chase squirrels around in, that’s great! Being able to get lots of exercise and fresh air is wonderful for Fido. The squirrels, however, may not be as thrilled. (We suspect that some squirrels actually enjoy taunting dogs, but that’s another topic.) We strongly advocate making sure that your furry pal knows basic doggy obedience commands. As it turns out, squirrels are actually part of the reason that teaching your pup to Heel is so important. Many of our canine buddies just can’t resist running after squirrels. If your dog is big enough to haul you along, this can be quite dangerous!
Cats And Squirrels
If you have a kitty, there’s a good chance that Fluffy spends a lot of her time at a window, watching birds and squirrels. Your furball may also make an odd clicking sound if she spots a squirrel. This is one of Fluffy’s more unusual quirks. Cats do this when they see things they would consider prey in the wild. (We suspect this sound is a kitty transmission noise that happens when cats change gears and go from being adorable house pets to ferocious predators.) Of course, some of our feline buddies actually do look a bit like big squirrels. The Maine Coon, with its bushy tail and cute chirping noises, is one of them.
Parasite Control
Squirrels are very cute, but it’s important to remember that they are wild animals, and can carry viruses and parasites. Keep up with your pet’s vaccinations and parasite control products!
Appreciating Squirrels
While you may not want to get into the habit of feeding squirrels all the time, there’s nothing wrong with leaving a few peanuts out for them. After all, it is a squirrel holiday! It also wouldn’t be inappropriate to get your pet a new squirrel toy.
